Organisational Change Management

Organisational change management is the process of developing a planned approach to change in an organisation. Change management entails thoughtful planning and sensitive implementation, and above all, consultation with, and involvement of, the people affected by the changes. Before starting organisational change, ask yourself:

  • What do we want to achieve with this change?
  • Why?
  • How will we know that the change has been achieved?
  • Who is affected by this change, and how will they react to it?
  • How much of this change can we achieve ourselves, and what parts of the change do we need help with?

If you decide organisational change is required, key points to consider when undertaking organisational change are:

  • You need to take a holistic approach. Too often, and with the best of intentions, managers change one facet of the organisation without regard for the whole system
  • Any organisational change is preceded by personal change. You need to understand how those affected by the changes are feeling. Change is more often resisted than supported in organisations because people rarely are given the chance to understand the reason for the change.
  • The relationship between change and performance is not instantaneous. Change involves time and the opportunity to learn. So don't expect performance improvement too quickly.
